To ensure that shisha tobacco has the desired consistency and allows you to smoke for as long as possible, it is mixed with humectants. Occasionally, however, it happens that the shisha tobacco becomes a little too dry and no longer produces the desired smoke. If this is the case, your tobacco can be easily re-moistened. In the past, the shisha tobacco that was available on the German market always had to be moistened, as the German tobacco regulations stipulated that shisha tobacco could only contain 5% humectants. Fortunately, this is no longer the case today and shisha tobacco in Germany is also mixed with the necessary 20-30% humectants, which means that it needs to be additionally moistened much less frequently.
Tobacco humectants: what is suitable?
Before some people come up with the idea of moistening the tobacco with water, we would like to tell you about the suitable remedies for good shisha tobacco. Water is a tasteless liquid and therefore not particularly helpful when it comes to refining an aromatic tobacco . Molasses or glycerin are best for keeping the tobacco moist. If you use a molasses that harmonizes with the taste of the tobacco, it will not change the intended taste of your tobacco. In addition, molasses is said to ensure better smoke development.
Molasses or molasses?
The terms molasses and molasses are often used interchangeably, but this is not entirely correct. Molasses is a type of syrup that is created as a byproduct of sugar production and therefore has an extremely high sugar content. Molasses is the actual humectant in shisha tobacco, which essentially consists of glycerin, water, honey and molasses.
Moisten shisha tobacco properly
The rule of thumb is: For 50g of German shisha tobacco , you can add around 1-2 teaspoons of molasses or glycerin. It's best to start with a teaspoon and then see if you need to add anything else. If you add too much molasses, you may experience headaches and nausea, and the excess molasses will run out of the tobacco head into the smoke column. Distribute the tobacco loosely and evenly in a bowl and gradually add the molasses. Then you have to mix the tobacco well with the molasses by stirring it with a spoon or stirrer . If you let it sit overnight, the molasses has had enough time to work and the moisture is well distributed. Now your tobacco is ready to use again !
